![]() ![]() That’s where cloud backup services like Backblaze come into play.īackblaze is a popular cloud backup service that offers users simple, affordable, and unlimited cloud storage. Whether you’re an individual or business, protecting your data from loss or damage is essential. Or change your 2-factor to "Google Auth" app on your own phone before deleting that Twilio phone number. As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, data storage has become more critical than ever. Just make sure you turn off 2-factor before deleting your Twilio phone number. ![]() ![]() In fact, you can do that immediately after creating your Backblaze account and verifying that SMS number. Then if you ever want to sever relationship with that phone number, just sign into the twilio website and delete it! Boom, problem solved. This support article seems to indicate it is about $2 for you to solve: IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT YOUR PRIVACY (you shouldn't be, but if you are), one way to go is to buy an SMS phone number from somebody like Twilio which isn't that expensive. Once we implemented the cap alerts to your SMS number I'd be programming along and my cell phone would beep saying "Backblaze says bucket is full" and at the same time it would start failing in my debugger, and I'd laugh and think, "this is a good system, customers will like it". Funny story, when I was first using Backblaze B2 I hit the free account cap and was totally frustrated by why uploads were no longer working. Part of the "caps and alerts" system is you can get an SMS when a cap is hit, which we have found to be WAY HIGHER in visibility to customers than an email which is easily missed in a customer's overloaded email inbox. Entering a credit card "unlocks" the ability to move this higher. The same identical system you can setup to make sure your credit card bill never surpasses $35/month (or whatever the value you feel comfortable with) that exists anyway is just hard-coded to 10 GBytes if you haven't entered a credit card. Done! Since we have the "caps and alerts" anyway, it was really easy for us to build, I thought it was a clever way of doing it. The implementation detail of how Backblaze implements the "10 MBytes Free does not even require a credit card" is we simply set a 10 GByte "cap and limit" automatically when you create the account. Yet ANOTHER reason for the SMS phone numbers is the "caps and alerts". The phishers really don't like identifying themselves with contact back to them SMS numbers for obvious reasons.įor that last example, we have thought about only requiring a phone number for public buckets, but we're erroring on the side of caution here, and as I mentioned it's really useful for making sure we don't delete customers data for lack of payment ANYWAY which applies to private buckets. So by verifying their identity with a round trip to an SMS (text messaging) number, this prevents a whole lot of abuse where they could use our "free" trial to infect the world. Because you can sign up for a free account to get a trial (which is TOTALLY legit and we really want that), phishing fraud, viruses, and bad bad jerks attacking the world are hosting those things on Backblaze B2 in public buckets - unpaid (not that the "unpaid" part is the real problem). There are some other reasons also, here's one example: Behind the scenes, Backblaze has a particular problem we are dealing with in a variety of ways. But if we are about to delete 1 Petabyte of data for non-payment, we HATE losing that business and we certainly don't want to delete it just because you missed the emails we sent and it's all a harmless mistake. I swear we won't call you to sell you anything, or sell that number, or leak it. u/brianwski any comments? Why a phone number?įirst of all, it's really good to have another contact point for a customer. ![]()
